Remove backgrounds in ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and n8n

Add removebackground.dev to your AI app once, then ask it to cut out a photo. You get a transparent PNG back in the chat, made by the same engine as the website.

Apps sign in with your removebackground.dev account. Apps that can't sign in can use an API key instead.

Set it up in your app

ChatGPT

In Settings → Apps, turn on developer mode and create an app with the server URL https://removebackground.dev/mcp and OAuth sign-in. Connect, sign in to removebackground.dev, then upload a photo and ask for the background to be removed.

Claude

In Settings → Connectors, choose Add custom connector, paste https://removebackground.dev/mcp and click Connect. Sign in to removebackground.dev and allow access.

Claude Code

Run this once, then type /mcp in Claude Code to sign in.

Cursor

Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json. Cursor asks you to sign in the first time it uses the server.

Add an MCP Client node (or MCP Client Tool for an AI agent). Set the transport to HTTP Streamable, the URL to https://removebackground.dev/mcp and authentication to Bearer with your API key.

Use an API key instead

Any MCP app that lets you add headers works with an API key. Create one under API keys on your account page and send it as Authorization: Bearer (or X-Api-Key).

Questions

Does it cost anything?

Each image the AI app processes uses 1 credit from your account. New accounts get 50 free credits, and credit packs never expire.

Do I need an API key?

No. ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and VS Code sign in with your removebackground.dev account. An API key is only needed for apps that can't sign in, such as n8n.

What happens to my images?

They are used only to make your cut-out. Uploads and results are deleted after 48 hours, and download links stop working after 24 hours.

How do I disconnect an app?

Each connected app gets its own key, named after the app, under API keys on your account page. Revoke it and the app is disconnected straight away.

Which images work?

JPG, PNG and WebP up to 25 MB. Results are transparent PNG by default, or WebP, or JPG on a background colour you choose.
