Remove the background for print-on-demand designs
In print-on-demand, the background is part of the print: a JPEG's white box can end up on a black shirt. Printful recommends a transparent PNG for DTG garments, 150 to 300 DPI at the actual print size, the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 profile, and no semi-transparent edges or fades. Printify accepts JPEG, PNG and SVG and recommends 300 DPI, or 120 to 150 DPI for large items such as blankets.

How to do it
- Upload the largest originalPixels needed are print inches times DPI: a 12 x 16 inch t-shirt print at 150 DPI needs 1800 x 2400 px. Removing the background doesn't add pixels, so check the size before you start.
- Keep it transparent and check the edgesThe tool starts transparent. Zoom into the edges: hair, fur and soft shadows come out partly transparent, which Printful says can print patchy on DTG and DTF. Subjects with clean, solid outlines print best.
- Download full size as PNGDownload the full size as PNG to keep every pixel and the transparency. Place it in the product's template from Printful's File guidelines tab, or in the print area shown in Printify's Product Creator.
Tips and common mistakes
- Preview on a dark productA faint white fringe left from the old background is invisible on a white shirt and obvious on a black one. Check the cutout on a dark preview before you publish.
- Don't use Save for WebPrintful warns that Save for Web often drops files to 72 DPI. Export with Save As or Save a Copy, and check the image size first.
- Full-bleed prints don't need transparencyPosters, canvas and all-over prints cover the whole area. Printful suggests JPEG for full-coverage photos and artwork; keep transparency for designs printed on a garment colour.
- Bright colours print dullerPrintful notes neon and very saturated RGB colours can print duller than on screen, and white or pale designs can vanish on light garments. Add contrast rather than relying on glow.
- Photograph a real sample for GoogleEtsy allows stock mockups for print-on-demand items if the photo's owner has authorised it. Google Merchant Center disallows mockups that don't show the physical product, so use a photo of a printed sample there.
- Only print what you have rights toRemoving a background doesn't change who owns the image. Use your own artwork and photos, or ones licensed for merchandise.
Questions
What file format is best for print-on-demand?
A transparent PNG for designs printed on garments and other products. Printful recommends PNG for DTG because JPEG can't store transparency and leaves a white background. Use JPEG for full-coverage prints like posters.
What DPI do print-on-demand files need?
Printful asks for 150 to 300 DPI depending on the product, at least 150 DPI for most apparel. Printify recommends 300 DPI, or 120 to 150 DPI for large products such as leggings, blankets and tapestries.
How many pixels do I need for a t-shirt print?
Multiply the print size in inches by the DPI. Printful's standard t-shirt print area is 12 x 16 inches, so 150 DPI needs 1800 x 2400 pixels, and some DTG products go up to 15 x 18 inches. Check each product's template.
Why is there a white box around my design on the shirt?
The file has a solid background, usually because it was saved as JPEG. Remove the background, download a PNG, and check for leftover fringe on a dark preview.
Can I turn a photo into a print-on-demand design?
Yes. Remove the background, download the full size PNG, and check that the subject is large enough in pixels for the print area. Clean outlines print better than fine hair or soft shadows.
Can I use mockups in my listings?
On Etsy, yes, if the mockup's owner has authorised its use. For Google Shopping, Google disallows mockups that don't depict the physical product, so photograph a real printed sample.
