Remove the background from product photos

Sales channels agree on the basics: a clean background, the whole product in frame, and no added text, borders or watermarks. Amazon wants pure white with the product filling 85% of the frame, Google Shopping wants 75% to 90%, and Etsy turns transparent areas black. Keep a transparent cutout as your master, export white for marketplaces, and frame every SKU the same way.

Amazon main imagePure white RGB 255, 255, 255; product fills at least 85%; 1000 px or more for zoom
Google ShoppingAt least 500 x 500 px, 1500 x 1500 recommended; product fills 75% to 90%; no borders or overlays
eBay500 px minimum, about 1600 x 1600 recommended; white generally best
Etsy2000 px or more recommended; transparent PNGs show black
Shopify2048 x 2048 px for square images; under 20 MB

How to do it

  1. Upload one photo or a whole batchAdd JPG, PNG or WebP files up to 25 MB each, or bulk upload up to 100 at once. Start from the original camera files; every resize or chat app compression costs edge detail.
  2. Choose the background for the channelThe tool starts transparent. Keep it for your own site and design work, pick white (#ffffff) for Amazon, eBay and Google Shopping, or a brand colour for ads and social posts.
  3. Download and frame consistentlyDownload HD or full size: PNG or WebP for transparent, JPEG for a solid colour. Crop every SKU to the same ratio and the same margin. For thousands of products, the API can also crop to the subject.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Keep a transparent masterSave one transparent PNG per product. You can place it on white, a colour or a lifestyle scene later without cutting it out again.
  • Coloured backgrounds have limitsA brand colour works on your store, social and ads, but not for an Amazon main image, which must be pure white. On eBay, stick to a neutral backdrop.
  • Decide on shadows onceRemoving the background also removes the floor shadow, so products can look like they float. If you add a soft shadow back in your editor, use the same one for every product.
  • Same fill across the catalogueProducts that fill 60% of one image and 95% of the next make a grid look messy. Aim for 85% to 90%, which also passes both Amazon (85% or more) and Google (75% to 90%).
  • Don't upscale small photosEnlarging a 600 px photo to 2000 px adds blur, not detail. Reshoot anything under about 1000 px on the longest side.
  • Shiny items on darkeBay notes a darker background can suit jewellery and other reflective items. Chrome and glass edges vanish against pure white.

Questions

Should product photos have a white or transparent background?

Use white for marketplaces: Amazon requires pure white for the main image and Etsy shows transparency as black. Use transparent for your own store, banners and designs, where the page colour shows through.

What size should product photos be?

A 2048 x 2048 pixel square covers the common recommendations: Shopify's 2048 x 2048, Etsy's 2000 px or more, eBay's 1600 x 1600, Google's 1500 x 1500 and Amazon's 1000 px for zoom.

How much of the frame should the product fill?

Amazon wants at least 85% for the main image, and Google Shopping wants 75% to 90%. Aim for 85% to 90% to meet both.

Can I use a coloured background for product photos?

Yes on your own store, ads and social media. Not for an Amazon main image, which must be pure white, and keep it neutral on eBay.

How do I remove backgrounds from hundreds of product photos?

Bulk upload handles up to 100 images at a time in the browser. For larger catalogues, use the API or the n8n node, so new SKUs are processed as they are added.
