Remove the background for Amazon product photos
Amazon's main image must show only the product on pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255), filling at least 85% of the frame, with no text, logos, borders, props or watermarks. Make it 1000 pixels or more on the longest side so shoppers can zoom. Remove the background here, keep it white, and download a JPEG that meets those rules.

At a glance
| Background | Pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255 (main image) |
|---|---|
| Product fill | At least 85% of the image frame |
| Size | 1000 px or more on the longest side enables zoom; 500 px is the minimum |
| Formats | JPEG preferred; TIFF and PNG also accepted; no animated GIFs |
| Not allowed in the main image | Text, logos, borders, colour blocks, watermarks, props not included in the purchase |
| Packaging | Show the product out of its box, bag or case, unless the packaging is an important feature |
How to do it
- Upload the original photoUse the largest file you have (JPG, PNG or WebP up to 25 MB). If the longest side is under 1000 px, reshoot instead of upscaling: zoom needs real detail, and Amazon rejects images that are blurry, pixelated or have jagged edges.
- Keep the white backgroundThe tool starts on #ffffff, which is exactly RGB 255, 255, 255. Don't switch to off-white or light grey. Zoom in on fine parts such as cables, straps and clear plastic to check no old background is left around them.
- Download HD and check the fillDownload the HD or full size as a JPEG. Crop so the product spans at least 85% of the frame with only a thin white margin, then confirm the longest side is still 1000 px or more.
Tips and common mistakes
- Studio white is rarely pure whiteA white paper sweep under uneven light photographs as light grey, not 255, 255, 255. Replacing the background with a solid #ffffff fixes this every time, which a levels adjustment often doesn't.
- Too much empty marginA small product centred on a large white square is the most common way to miss the 85% rule. Crop tight to the product's longest dimension, but don't cut any part of it off.
- Props and extrasOnly what the buyer receives may appear in the main image. A mug shown with coffee beans, or a phone case shown on a phone that isn't included, belongs in the additional image slots.
- Badges and text"Best seller" ribbons, logos, size callouts and watermarks are not allowed in the main image. Put infographics in your other images.
- Fill all the image slotsAmazon recommends six images per listing. Use the white main image first, then angles, close-ups, scale and the product in use.
Questions
What background colour does Amazon require for product images?
The main image needs a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255. The rule applies to the main image; your other images can show the product in use or in a setting.
What size should Amazon product images be?
At least 1000 pixels on the longest side, which turns on zoom. The minimum Amazon accepts is 500 pixels on the longest side. Amazon does not set a required aspect ratio.
How much of the image should the product fill on Amazon?
At least 85% of the image frame. Crop close to the product with a thin white margin, and make sure no part of it is cut off.
Why was my Amazon main image rejected?
The usual causes are an off-white or grey background, a product filling less than 85% of the frame, added text, logos, borders or watermarks, props that aren't included, the product still in its packaging, or a blurry or pixelated photo.
Can I upload a transparent PNG to Amazon?
Amazon accepts PNG, but the main image has to show a pure white background. Save the cutout on #ffffff as a JPEG, Amazon's preferred format, so there is no doubt about what shoppers see.
How many images should an Amazon listing have?
Every listing needs at least one image, and Amazon recommends six.
