Turn a PNG with a background into a transparent PNG

PNG can store transparency, but plenty of PNGs still have a white or coloured background painted into every pixel. Renaming a file to .png or saving it again doesn't change that. Remove the background so those pixels become transparent, download the new PNG, and check it on a dark page before you use it.

PNG to transparent: at a glance

PNGSupports a full alpha channel, but only if the pixels are actually transparent
Renaming or re-savingDoesn't remove a background; the white pixels stay white
JPG to PNGA JPG has no transparency, so a converted JPG keeps its solid background until it's removed
OutputTransparent PNG or WebP, at the original size
EtsyTransparent PNGs aren't supported; transparent parts appear black

PNG to transparent: step by step

  1. Upload the PNGUse the largest version you have. Logos and product shots exported small or copied from a web page lose edge detail, and the cutout can't add it back.
  2. Remove the backgroundLeave the background set to transparent. Check enclosed areas at full zoom, such as the inside of letters, handles and gaps, where the old background can stay behind.
  3. Download and test the PNGDownload PNG, then open it on a dark page or a black slide. Real transparency shows the dark colour through it. Use WebP instead if the image is only for a website and you want a smaller file.

PNG to transparent: tips and common mistakes

  • Check the file, not the previewImage viewers and editors draw a checkerboard under transparent areas. Some downloaded "transparent PNGs" have that checkerboard painted in. Place the file on a coloured page to be sure.
  • White products need careA white product on a white background has very little contrast at the edges. Upload the highest resolution you have and check the outline on a dark colour.
  • Keep the originalSave the transparent version as a new file. You can always remove the background again from the original, but not put back detail you've lost.
  • Where the PNG is going mattersMany upload forms and marketplaces flatten transparency to a colour or convert to JPG. For those, pick the background colour yourself and export a JPG instead.

PNG to transparent: questions

Why is my PNG not transparent?

Because its background was saved as white or coloured pixels. PNG only shows transparency where the pixels themselves are transparent, so the background has to be removed.

Does renaming a JPG to .png make it transparent?

No. Renaming changes the file name, not the pixels. A JPG has no transparency, so the background has to be removed and the result saved as PNG.

Can I make many PNGs transparent at once?

Yes. Bulk handles up to 100 images per run at 1 credit each, and downloads them all as one ZIP. Failed images are free.

PNG or WebP?

PNG works everywhere and is lossless. WebP keeps transparency at a smaller size and suits websites.
