Remove the background from team and company headshots
A team page looks put together when every headshot shares the same background, crop and size, even if the photos came from different offices and phones. Remove each background, place everyone on one colour, crop head and shoulders at the same scale, and export one size. Keep the transparent PNGs so a rebrand doesn't mean reshooting.

At a glance
| Background | One solid colour or one shared backdrop image for the whole team |
|---|---|
| Crop | Head and shoulders, eyes at the same height in every photo |
| Master file | Transparent PNG, kept for later colour changes |
| Web file | WebP is usually 25 to 35% smaller than a JPEG of similar quality; keep a JPEG fallback |
| Alt text | Say what the photo is for on the page, usually the person's name |
How to do it
- Collect the photosAsk for a head-and-shoulders photo against a plain wall, at eye level, in daylight, with a little space above the head. Phone portraits are fine; the higher the resolution, the cleaner the hair edges.
- Set one background for everyoneThe tool starts transparent. Pick your brand colour or a light neutral and use exactly the same hex value for every person. Mid-tone and light colours hide small hair-edge differences better than pure black.
- Crop to one templateDownload each headshot, then crop to the same aspect ratio, for example 4:5 or 1:1, with the eyes on the same line and the shoulders at the same width. Export every file at the same pixel size.
Tips and common mistakes
- Match the light, not just the backgroundA new background won't hide one person lit from the left and another from the right. Ask everyone to face a window, or shoot new joiners in the same spot.
- Write a crop guideA one-page template with the eye line and shoulder width marked lets anyone on the team produce matching headshots for new joiners.
- Batch the whole teamBulk upload processes up to 100 photos in one batch with one background colour and crop to the subject, which keeps a whole directory consistent in one pass.
- Keep the transparent originalsStore the PNG cutouts with the original photos. A brand colour change, a dark-mode page or a conference badge then needs a re-export, not a new shoot.
- Ask before you publishCheck that each person is happy with the photo and where it will appear. Some people prefer not to be on a public page even if they are in the internal directory.
Questions
What background colour is best for team headshots?
Any colour, as long as every photo uses the same one. Light neutrals and soft brand colours are the most forgiving with hair edges and different skin tones.
How do I make headshots from different photographers match?
Remove each background, place everyone on the same colour, then crop to one template with the eyes on the same line and export at one size. Similar lighting in the originals helps most.
What size should headshots be for a website?
Pick one aspect ratio, such as 1:1 or 4:5, and export at about twice the size it is displayed so it stays sharp on high-resolution screens. Use WebP with a JPEG fallback to keep pages light.
What alt text should a team photo have?
Alt text should convey what the image means on the page. On a team page that is usually the person's name; if the name is already written right next to the photo, describe what it adds or treat it as decorative.
Should I keep transparent versions?
Yes. A transparent PNG of each person lets you change the background later for a rebrand, a dark theme or a printed badge without reshooting.
