Remove the background for Etsy listing photos

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and tall, and your first photo needs at least 635 pixels on each side or it can rank lower in search. Make the first photo landscape or square with space around the item, because Etsy crops it into square, portrait and landscape thumbnails. Save as JPG: transparent areas of a PNG show up black on Etsy.

How to do it

  1. Upload a wide shotStart from a photo taken further back than you think you need, at least 2000 px on each side, with the whole item and some empty space around it. That space is what lets Etsy's thumbnail crops keep the item whole.
  2. Put the item on a solid backgroundThe tool starts on white. Etsy allows changed backgrounds in every photo except your required unedited one, as long as the item's colour, condition, scale and materials stay true. A soft neutral that suits your shop works too.
  3. Download a JPG and set the thumbnailDownload HD as a JPG, never a transparent PNG. If an upload stalls, compress it under 1 MB. In Etsy, use Adjust Thumbnail to check the item is clear in all 3 crops before you publish.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Keep one photo untouchedFor most items Etsy requires at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Don't replace every background in a listing; keep one original among your 20.
  • Transparent PNGs turn blackEtsy doesn't support transparency, so a cutout saved as PNG shows a black background in your listing. Fill it with white or a colour before uploading.
  • Centre the item, leave roomEtsy crops your first photo to square, portrait and landscape. Keep the most important part in the centre and leave margin on every side. Vertical photos lose the most in the crop.
  • Use one shape for every photoThe first photo sets the shape of the rest. Export all photos in a listing at the same ratio for a tidy gallery.
  • Wrong colours after uploadEtsy converts images to sRGB. If colours shift, convert to sRGB before uploading; CMYK is for print only.
  • No collages as the main photoA main photo that is dark, blurry or a collage can push your listing lower in search results. Use one clear shot of one item.

Questions

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in width and height. Your first photo must be at least 635 pixels wide and tall to avoid showing up lower in searches.

What is the best aspect ratio for Etsy photos?

Etsy doesn't set one ratio. It asks for a landscape or square first photo and recommends horizontal images, because thumbnails are cropped to square, portrait and landscape. Use the same ratio for every photo in a listing.

Does Etsy require a white background?

No. You can change backgrounds in any photo except the one unedited photo Etsy requires for most items, as long as the item looks the way it will arrive.

Why does my PNG show a black background on Etsy?

Etsy doesn't support transparent PNGs, and transparent areas display as black. Put the cutout on white or a solid colour and upload a JPG.

Can I use AI or background removal on Etsy listing photos?

Yes, except on your required unedited photo. Etsy allows edits to lighting, colour, crop and background if they don't hide flaws or change how the item looks. Etsy suggests noting AI edits in your description.

How many photos can an Etsy listing have?

Up to 20 photos per listing. Use them for angles, scale, details and one unedited photo of the real item.
