Remove the background from clothing photos

Clothing is shot flat, on a mannequin that is edited out later (the ghost mannequin), or on a model. Google's virtual try-on covers tops, bottoms, dresses and shoes and wants one garment, front-facing and fully visible, at least 512 x 512 px and ideally 1024 or more. eBay asks for the front, back, labels and close-ups, on a light background for dark clothes and a dark one for light clothes.

How to do it

  1. Upload a prepared garmentSteam it and lint-roll it, then shoot it straight on with even light: laid flat and photographed from directly above, or on a mannequin at chest height. For a ghost mannequin, also shoot the inside back of the neck with the garment turned inside out.
  2. Remove the backdropThe tool starts on white. It removes the backdrop, not the mannequin: for a ghost mannequin, download a transparent PNG, mask out the neck and arms in an editor and fill the neck gap with the inside shot.
  3. Download and keep one layoutDownload HD as a JPG for marketplaces. Crop every product to the same ratio, with the garment in the same position and size, so your category pages line up.

Tips and common mistakes

  • White on white loses the edgeA white shirt on pure white has no visible outline. eBay suggests a dark background for light clothes; where a marketplace insists on white, light the garment from the side so seams and edges cast a little shadow.
  • One colour per imageGoogle asks for a separate image for every colour or pattern, matching exactly what is sold, and no group shots of several colourways. Shoot each colour, don't recolour one photo.
  • Photograph the labelseBay recommends photos of labels and close-ups of details such as embroidery. The size and fabric labels answer the questions buyers would otherwise message you about.
  • Show flaws on used clothingeBay asks sellers to photograph imperfections such as small holes or stains, and Etsy bans edits that hide flaws. Remove the background, not the stain.
  • Follow the try-on rules for your best sellersFor Google try-on, shoot the whole garment front-on, sleeves down, hood down, nothing covering the details. Those rules also make a clear main image anywhere.

Questions

What background is best for clothing photos?

A plain, solid one. White or light grey is the usual choice, and eBay suggests white or light for dark clothes and black or dark for light clothes. Amazon main images need pure white.

What is a ghost mannequin photo, and can background removal make one?

It shows a garment as if worn by an invisible body. You photograph it on a mannequin, remove the backdrop, mask out the mannequin, and add a shot of the inside neck. Background removal does the first step; the mannequin masking is done in an editor.

Flat lay, mannequin or model?

Flat lays are fastest and work well for kids' clothes and accessories. Mannequins and models show fit and drape. Amazon's updated European clothing style guide asks sellers to present products on a model, with exceptions for some categories.

What image size does Google need for virtual try-on?

At least 512 x 512 pixels, ideally 1024 or more, and Google's general minimum for all product images becomes 500 x 500 pixels from January 31, 2027. The garment should be the only item in the image and fully visible.

Can I remove backgrounds from a whole collection at once?

Yes. Bulk upload handles up to 100 photos at a time, and the API can process a full catalogue. Each image costs 1 credit (HD in the web editor: 2), and failed images are free.
