Product photo sizes and rules for every major marketplace

One table with the minimum and recommended sizes, formats, file limits and background rules for six selling platforms, each taken from the platform's own documentation and checked on 23 October 2026.

Every marketplace publishes its own image rules, and they disagree on almost everything: minimum size, maximum file size, accepted formats, whether the background must be white. If you sell on more than one platform, it helps to have the numbers in one place and to shoot once at a size that satisfies all of them.

Every figure below comes from the platform's own help pages, seller blog or developer documentation, linked under Sources. They were checked on 23 October 2026. Platforms change these rules without much notice, so if a number is critical for you, open the source before a big shoot.

If you want one master size that works everywhere, shoot and export a square image of at least 2,200 x 2,200 px. That clears Walmart's recommendation, Etsy's 2,000 px advice, eBay's 1,600 px and Amazon's zoom threshold, and it is well inside Shopify's 5,000 px limit. Then save a JPEG copy under 5 MB for Walmart and under 8 MB for Meta catalogs.

Amazon

Amazon's seller blog sets the basics for product images:

  • Images must be 500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side. Amazon prefers images larger than 1,000 pixels on each side so shoppers can zoom.
  • Accepted formats are JPEG, TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF, with JPEG preferred.
  • A white background, RGB 255, 255, 255, is the standard and Amazon's default for product shots.
  • Every product needs at least one image, and Amazon recommends at least six.
  • Images should be clear, with no pixelation or jagged edges, and the blog's setup advice is to have the product fill 85% or more of the frame.

The full main image rules live in Seller Central's product image requirements, which need a seller login to read, and category style guides can add stricter rules. Check both before a large shoot.

Etsy

Etsy's help article on images recommends:

  • Listing photos at least 2,000 pixels in width and height.
  • A first photo of at least 635 pixels in both dimensions, so the listing does not show up lower in search.
  • Supported types .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic. Etsy does not support transparent PNGs, and transparent areas can appear black, so flatten cut-outs onto a color before uploading.
  • Keeping file size in check: images larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slower connection.
  • Up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing.

The first photo should be landscape or square, because Etsy uses it to set the shape of the thumbnails that follow. Etsy also converts images to the sRGB color profile, so converting yourself before upload keeps colors predictable.

Etsy's October 2026 photo policy

Etsy updated its Listing Image Requirements policy in October 2026. Listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, with some exceptions depending on what you sell. Other photos may be edited, including with AI tools, as long as they still accurately represent what the buyer receives. In practice: keep one honest, unedited photo in every listing, and use white-background or cut-out versions for the rest.

eBay

eBay's picture policy and Seller Center photo tips say:

  • Photos must be at least 500 pixels on the longest side. The Seller Center recommends 1,600 x 1,600 pixels.
  • You can add up to 24 photos to each listing.
  • No added borders, text, artwork or watermarks, including ownership watermarks.
  • No stock photos for used, damaged or defective items: show the actual item.
  • Shoot against a white or neutral background, center the item and fill as much of the frame as possible.

eBay's tips page does not list file formats or a maximum file size. JPEG and PNG are the safe choice.

Shopify

Shopify's product media documentation is the most permissive, because it is your own store:

  • Product and collection images can be up to 5,000 x 5,000 px, or 25 megapixels, and must be smaller than 20 MB.
  • For square product images, 2,048 x 2,048 px usually displays best.
  • PNG is the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG. TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP are also accepted, including animated GIF and WebP.
  • Shopify serves each visitor the best format their browser supports, so you do not need to make WebP copies yourself.

The one rule worth following is consistency: Shopify notes that main images shown side by side on collection pages only line up if they share the same aspect ratio.

Walmart Marketplace

Walmart's Marketplace Learn guide is the most specific of the six:

  • 2,200 x 2,200 px pixel dimensions, 1:1 square.
  • 1,500 x 1,500 px minimum for zoom.
  • JPEG, JPG, PNG or BMP; GIF is not permitted.
  • 5 MB or less, RGB color, 8 bits per pixel.
  • Seamless white background, RGB 255, 255, 255 for main images. Larger items may be shown in an expected environment.
  • Walmart recommends at least four images per listing and the 14-digit GTIN in the file name.

Walmart also asks you to crop the item as close to the frame as possible, avoid excessive background space, and never upscale small images to fill the frame. The main image cannot contain watermarks, your name or your logo, or accessories that are not included.

Instagram Shopping (Meta catalogs)

Instagram Shopping pulls product images from a Meta catalog, managed in Commerce Manager. Meta's documentation says:

  • Catalog images must be JPEG or PNG, at least 500 x 500 pixels and up to 8 MB.
  • Shops display product images at a 1:1 ratio, and Meta recommends 1,024 x 1,024 px for best quality.
  • Use a white backdrop, and do not overlay text, calls to action, promo codes or watermarks on the product.
  • Instagram product pages may crop images, so keep the product centered with some margin.

If you also run catalog ads, single image ads use a different shape (1.91:1), so check Meta's specs for the ad format separately.

Practical notes for every platform

  • Shoot bigger than you need. You can always scale down; scaling up adds blur that zoom makes obvious. Walmart explicitly asks you not to resize small images upward.
  • Fill the frame. Amazon, eBay and Walmart all ask for the product to occupy most of the image. Crop tight, with an even margin.
  • Pure white means 255, 255, 255. A light gray from a poorly lit backdrop is not white to Amazon or Walmart. Lighting helps, but most sellers set the background in editing. See how to take product photos at home.
  • Keep transparency for your own site only. Marketplaces either want white or do not support transparent PNGs. Use JPEG on white for listings and a transparent PNG or WebP for your store's design. Our format comparison explains the trade-offs.
  • Name files usefully. Walmart recommends the GTIN in the file name. A product identifier in every file name makes bulk uploads easier on any platform.
  • Keep one unedited shot. Etsy now requires it, and it is good practice everywhere for building buyer trust.

Getting every photo onto white quickly

If you have a folder of product shots to put on pure white, removebackground.dev can process up to 100 images at once and export JPG on white (255, 255, 255) or transparent PNG, so you can prepare marketplace and store versions from the same upload.

Questions

What size should product photos be for all marketplaces?

A square image of at least 2,200 x 2,200 px works everywhere in this guide. It meets Walmart's recommended size, Etsy's 2,000 px advice, eBay's 1,600 px recommendation and Amazon's zoom threshold. Save JPEG copies under 5 MB for Walmart and under 8 MB for Meta catalogs.

Does Amazon require a white background?

Amazon's seller blog says product shots should in most cases be on white, RGB 255, 255, 255, which it calls the industry standard and Amazon's default. The detailed main image rules are in Seller Central, which needs a seller login.

Can I upload a transparent PNG to Etsy?

No. Etsy says transparent PNGs are not supported and transparent areas may show up black. Flatten the image onto white or another color first.

What is the minimum image size on eBay?

eBay requires at least 500 pixels on the longest side, and its Seller Center recommends 1,600 x 1,600 pixels. You can add up to 24 photos per listing.

Does Etsy allow edited or AI-edited product photos?

Yes, with a condition added in October 2026: each listing must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Other photos can be edited if they still accurately represent what the buyer receives.

What image size does Shopify recommend?

2,048 x 2,048 px for square product images. Images can be up to 5,000 x 5,000 px or 25 megapixels and must be under 20 MB.
