How to remove a picture background in PowerPoint

PowerPoint has three tools that look similar but do different things: Remove Background, the newer Edit Image editor, and Set Transparent Color. Here is how each works on Windows, Mac and the web, where they fall short, and when to insert a transparent PNG instead.

PowerPoint can cut a person or product out of a photo without leaving your slides, which is handy for title slides, team pages and product decks. There are three built-in ways to do it, plus a fourth that often gives the cleanest result: inserting an image that is already transparent.

Remove Background (classic)Detects the subject and marks the background for removal, which you correct by handPhotos with a clear subject

Method 1: Remove Background (classic)

This is the tool Microsoft documents for PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2024 and PowerPoint 2021, on both Windows and Mac.

  1. Select the picture on your slide. If you do not see the Picture Format tab, double-click the picture.
  2. On the ribbon, select Picture Format > Remove Background (on some versions the tab is just Format).
  3. PowerPoint colors the area it plans to remove magenta. The parts in natural color will be kept.
  4. Correct the selection on the Background Removal tab. Choose Mark Areas to Keep and draw with the pencil over magenta parts you want to keep, or Mark Areas to Remove and draw over parts that should go.
  5. Select Keep Changes to apply, or Discard All Changes to start over.

The background is now transparent on the slide. To use the cut-out elsewhere, right-click the picture and choose Save as Picture, then pick PNG so the transparency is kept.

Tips for better results with the classic tool

  • Short strokes work better than outlines. A quick line across an area is enough to tell PowerPoint to keep or remove it; you do not need to trace the edge.
  • Crop first. Cropping the picture close to the subject before removing the background gives the detection less to guess about.
  • Zoom in. Use the zoom slider in the corner of the window to work on edges at 200% or more.
  • Accept its limits on hair. The classic tool produces hard edges. Fine hair, fur and semi-transparent objects come out choppy, which is visible on a projector.

Method 2: the new Edit Image editor

In March 2026 Microsoft announced a built-in image editor for PowerPoint on the web, Windows and Mac, with Remove background, Erase, Move, Upscale, Auto enhance, text tools and effects. The Microsoft 365 Insider post lists these requirements:

  • Windows: Version 2510 (Build 19422.20000) or later.
  • Mac: Version 16.104 (Build 25121423) or later.
  • Web: rolling out to PowerPoint for the web users.

Microsoft notes that features like this roll out gradually, so you may not have it yet even on a recent version.

To use it:

  1. Select the picture.
  2. Click Edit Image (the first button on the left of the Picture Format tab), or right-click the picture and choose Edit Image.
  3. Choose Remove background.
  4. Preview the result, then select Update to replace the picture on your slide.

This is the only route that removes backgrounds in PowerPoint for the web. If you have the new editor, it is worth comparing with the classic tool on your own photos, and Erase helps with leftovers.

Method 3: Set Transparent Color

Set Transparent Color is not a background remover. It makes every pixel of one exact color transparent. That is perfect for a logo on a pure white rectangle and almost useless for a photo, where the "white" wall is really hundreds of slightly different shades.

  1. Select the picture.
  2. Go to Picture Format > Color and choose Set Transparent Color.
  3. When the pointer changes, click the color you want to make transparent.
  4. To undo it, select Reset Picture in the Adjust group.

Microsoft documents these limits:

  • Only one color can be transparent per picture.
  • Areas that look like one color are often many subtle variations, so you may get speckled or partial results. It works best with simple, solid-color pictures such as clip art.
  • It only works on an object inserted as a picture, not on a picture used as a shape fill.
  • Microsoft's articles say picture transparency settings need the desktop app, not the web version.

A common mistake is using it on a JPEG logo. JPEG compression adds faint noise around edges, so after Set Transparent Color you get a ragged white outline. If you have the original logo as PNG or SVG, use that instead.

Not a background remover: Picture Transparency

The Transparency button on the Picture Format tab (in recent versions) fades the entire picture. It offers seven presets (0%, 15%, 30%, 50%, 65%, 80% and 95%) and a slider in the Format Picture pane from 0 (fully opaque) to 100% (fully transparent). It is useful for faint background photos and watermarks. Microsoft notes that setting picture transparency is not currently possible in PowerPoint for the web; use the desktop app.

The classic steps and button names are the same on both desktop platforms. On the Mac, the correction tools sit on the Background Removal tab, which appears after you click Remove Background. In practice, the bigger difference is version, not platform: older perpetual versions of Office lack some of these tools, and the new editor needs a recent Microsoft 365 build.

Limits of PowerPoint's tools

  • No vector graphics. Microsoft says background removal is not possible for vector files such as SVG, AI, WMF and DRW; the button is grayed out. Vector graphics usually have no background to remove anyway.
  • Hard edges. The classic tool's edges are fine at slide size and rough when the image is enlarged or printed.
  • The cut-out lives in the deck. Removing a background in PowerPoint changes the picture in that presentation only. Save as Picture if you want a reusable file.

Inserting a transparent PNG instead

Often the cleanest approach is to remove the background before the image reaches PowerPoint and insert a ready-made transparent PNG:

  1. Get a cut-out with a transparent background (PNG or WebP), from any tool.
  2. In PowerPoint, choose Insert > Pictures and select the file.
  3. The picture appears with no background, and you can layer it over shapes, photos or slide backgrounds.

This keeps soft edges like hair intact, works the same on every platform, and lets you reuse the same cut-out in other decks and documents. Use PNG rather than JPEG: JPEG cannot store transparency, so the background comes back as a solid color. See PNG vs JPEG vs WebP for the details.

For logos, ask for the PNG or SVG version from whoever owns the brand assets before trying to cut one out yourself.

When to use a dedicated tool

PowerPoint's tools are fine for one or two pictures on a slide. For team photos, product catalogs or anything with hair, a dedicated background remover is faster and cleaner: removebackground.dev gives new accounts 50 free credits, processes up to 100 images at once, and downloads transparent PNGs you can insert straight into your deck.

Questions

Where is Remove Background in PowerPoint?

Select the picture, then choose Picture Format > Remove Background (on some versions the tab is called Format). In recent Microsoft 365 versions you may also see Edit Image as the first button on the Picture Format tab, which includes Remove background.

Can I remove a background in PowerPoint for the web?

Only with the newer Edit Image editor, which Microsoft is rolling out to PowerPoint for the web. The classic Remove Background tool and picture transparency settings require the desktop app.

Why is Remove Background grayed out?

The picture is probably a vector graphic such as SVG, AI, WMF or DRW, for which Microsoft says background removal is not possible. It can also happen when an object other than a picture is selected.

What is the difference between Remove Background and Set Transparent Color?

Remove Background detects the subject and removes everything else. Set Transparent Color makes one exact color transparent, which suits logos on a flat background but not photos, and only one color can be transparent per picture.

How do I save a picture without its background from PowerPoint?

After removing the background, right-click the picture, choose Save as Picture and save it as PNG, which keeps the transparent areas.
