Change the background to white

Pure white means RGB 255, 255, 255 (#ffffff), and that's what Amazon asks for on main product images, with the product filling 85% or more of the frame. Most other shops only recommend white or a neutral background. Remove the background, set it to #ffffff, and export a JPG. One exception: don't do this to a passport photo. The US State Department rejects edited photos, so retake it against a white or off-white wall instead.

How to do it

  1. Shoot with even lightLight the product from both sides or near a large window so there are no deep shadows on it. Shoot straight on, fill the frame, and keep the whole product in focus. The cutout keeps the product's own colours, so get them right in the photo.
  2. Remove the background on #ffffffThis page starts with #ffffff. Remove the background and check the edges at full zoom: grey fringes from the old backdrop show clearly on pure white, especially around white or light products.
  3. Frame it and export JPGCrop so the product fills most of the frame (85% or more for an Amazon main image) and export a JPG. JPG is fine here because nothing is transparent, and the file is smaller than PNG. Make square images when the shop displays a square grid.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Pure white vs off-whiteA white backdrop photographed in a studio usually reads a little below 255, so it looks white but isn't pure white. Amazon wants exactly 255, 255, 255 for the main image. Check with an eyedropper tool: every background pixel should read 255, 255, 255 or #ffffff.
  • White products on whiteA white mug or sneaker can disappear into the background. Light it so its edges have soft shading, and check the outline is still clear at thumbnail size. Don't add a border: Google Merchant Center and eBay don't allow them.
  • ShadowsA cutout on flat white can look like it floats. On your own store, a soft contact shadow under the product looks natural. For marketplace main images, keep the background itself pure white and check the platform's current rules before adding shadows.
  • Keep one unedited photo where requiredEtsy requires at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Use the white-background version for your other photos.
  • ID and passport photosOfficial photos have their own rules. The US wants white or off-white with no edits at all. The UK accepts plain light colours such as cream or light grey and also bans software changes. Check the issuing country's page and retake rather than edit.

Questions
