Remove the background from electronics photos
eBay's guides for phones and laptops ask for a white background, soft diffused light with the flash off, every angle, close-ups of cosmetic condition, and no props or accessories that aren't included. Used, damaged or defective items can't use stock photos on eBay. Screens and glass backs mirror the room, so control reflections when you shoot: background removal can't take them off the device.

How to do it
- Upload a glare-free photoClean the screen and body, then angle the device so the screen reflects something dark and plain rather than a window or you. Use soft light from the side and a tripod.
- Remove the background and check fine partsThe tool starts on white. Zoom in on cables, ports, the gap inside a headphone band and clear plastic parts: each should show white, with no trace of the desk.
- Download and crop consistentlyDownload HD or full size as a JPG. Fill the frame with the device, and use the same angle and crop for every model you sell so the range lines up.
Tips and common mistakes
- Kill screen glare at the shootA black card or dark cloth held where the screen reflects removes most glare. A polarising filter helps with glass backs. Turning off room lights in front of the device does the rest.
- Screen on, as it really looksFor used devices, a powered-on screen shows it works. Photograph the real screen rather than pasting in an image: eBay doesn't allow photos that don't accurately represent the item.
- Show scaleeBay suggests showing the size of a phone so buyers can tell models apart, such as a mini from a Pro. A hand or a common object in a secondary photo does it.
- Only what's in the boxPhotograph the cables, chargers and cases that are included, and nothing else. eBay asks for no props or accessories that won't be included.
- Keep IMEI and serials off screenDon't photograph settings pages or labels that show IMEI or serial numbers unless the buyer needs them. Google also disallows serial tags overlaid on product images.
- Dust shows at full sizeDust on screens and in ports is invisible to the eye but sharp at 1600 px. Clean with a microfibre cloth right before each shot.
Questions
What background is best for electronics photos?
White. eBay's phone and laptop guides recommend white backgrounds to increase your listing's visibility, and Amazon main images must be pure white.
How do I photograph a screen without glare?
Angle the device so the screen faces something dark, hold a black card where the reflection falls, use soft side light instead of flash, and try a polarising filter. Fix it at the shoot; removing the background does not remove reflections.
Can I use stock photos for used electronics?
Not on eBay: stock photos are not allowed for used, damaged or defective items. Photograph the device you are selling, including any wear.
Should the screen be on or off?
For new items, off or with a plain wallpaper looks cleanest. For used items, add a photo with the screen on to show it works, photographed as it really is.
Can I show accessories in the photo?
Only those included with the item. eBay asks for no props or accessories that won't be included, and Google disallows products not sold with the main product.
